Understanding the graduated license process

North Carolina utilizes a graduated licensing system for drivers under 18. This means you'll progress through stages, gaining more privileges as you gain experience. To begin, you'll enroll in a driver education class like those offered at Surry Driving School. Completing the class and behind-the-wheel training is the first crucial step.

After completing the class, you can head to any NCDMV office to test for your Level 1 Limited Learner Permit. The test includes a signs test, a multiple-choice test on your knowledge of the NC Driver Handbook, and a vision test. To advance to the Level 2 Limited Provisional License, you'll need to pass another signs test, a vision test, and an on-the-road driving test with a DMV Examiner.

Before you go to the DMV

It's essential to be prepared before visiting the NCDMV. Always refer to the official NCDMV website (ncdot.gov) for the latest requirements regarding required documents. This information is also available in Chapter One of the NC Driver Handbook. Ensuring you have all the necessary documents will save you time and prevent unnecessary trips.

Remember, once you obtain your Level 1 permit, you'll be in the graduated licensing process until you turn 18. Surry Driving School is here to support you throughout this journey!
